Preparing to Recover From Abdominal Surgery

By Rey Vetangelo

After you have scheduled the date for a needed abdominal surgery, there are several things you will want to make sure you do before that date arrives. By preparing ahead of time, you will be able to minimize the number of things that you will have to do when you are recovering.

The first thing you will want to do when you know that you have a scheduled abdominal surgery appointment is make sure that your insurance company is aware of it and that you understand exactly what costs they will cover.

Your insurance company may require you to get preauthorization for particular items, such as hospitalization. If you forget to notify them beforehand or if you call while at the hospital, they may refuse to cover the operation.

On the other hand, those who have a severe case may experience symptoms that hinder their ability to perform daily tasks or to perform common activities. The most common symptoms of this condition is tiredness and shortness of breath.

You do not want to decide that you want to do these things after the surgery and have to run to the store for the supplies. Instead, it is generally much better to be over prepared by having the things to do on hand, even if you do not end up doing them.

Let your boss know your circumstances, why you need the procedure, and when the procedure is planned as soon as you have a definite date. This gives your boss enough time to prepare and to cover your position for the time that you will be gone.

Studies have shown that people who are relaxed, content, and un-stressed tend to recover faster than those who are not content and stressed. More likely than not, the doctor will encourage you to get out of bed fairly soon following the surgery.

This will give you more leave if you have complications and need a lengthy amount of time to recover fully. Of course, you may need to prove your circumstances to your employer.

Do not be offended if your employer asks for a doctor's note verifying your condition as other people may have tried to leave on vacation under a faulty excuse in the past. If you are uncomfortable with telling your boss why you need surgery, you can simply say that you need it and then give him or her a doctor's note stating that the surgery is necessary.

However, anemia can also be found in patients previous to surgery who are suffering from internal bleeding or who have lost a lot of blood. This condition following surgery is usually related to bleeding episodes or frequent blood tests that occur throughout the procedure.

However, do not eat solid foods until your doctor tells you that it will be okay. Otherwise, you may suffer from various complications.

It is quite common for patient's to forget to ask their doctor for this note when they are considered to be fully healed. However, it can be a hassle to go back to the office for one.

Try to make sure that all of these things are done before you go to the hospital. There will probably still be times when you will want to do a few of these things, but it is important that you take proper care of yourself following the operation.

This means that you will probably want to make sure that your refrigerator and freezer are stocked with foods that you will be able to eat and enjoy following the operation.

For an abdominal related procedure, you will probably want to make sure you have a variety of soft, low-residue food items to ensure that you do not overtax your recovering digestive system.

Again, symptoms usually only present themselves when the condition is classified as moderate to severe. These side effects may include fatigue, weakness, pale skin, chest pain, dizziness, irritability, numbness and coldness in extremities, trouble breathing, a faster than normal heartbeat, and headaches. One of the reasons why it is important to have a regular, extensive check up with your doctor is so that you can be checked for anemia. When the condition is identified, then you can take steps to remedy it.

In the beginning, this will probably only mean walking. Walking may be surprisingly tiring following your surgery.

You will want to take as few trips up and down the stairs as possible. In addition, simply try to take care of any other stresses that may weigh on your mind.

Another one pressing against your stomach can provide a nice pressure that may relieve some of the pain and help you feel more comfortable so that you can sleep better. The extra pillows can also be used to prop yourself up when you do not feel like lying down completely, but when you want to relax. It is also a good idea to consider asking someone to be around who will be able to help you with various household tasks, such as running to the grocery store. Their help and company can be a tremendous comfort as you strive to recover.
