7 Yoga Myths Including: You Can't Use Yoga To Lose Weight

By Scott McLeod

Flexibility is required to do yoga. "I can't go to yoga, I'm not flexible."

* That's the point in doing it! : ) Yoga helps you become flexible and provides your body its benefits. Perhaps you have some social anxiety about looking "foolish" among a group of flexible yoga regulars.

* Well, just so you know, there are PLENTY of people in yoga class at the bottom of the totem pole in terms of flexibility. You gotta start somewhere, right? The important part is STARTING. If you feel a little uneasy in front more experienced people start at home and build your confidence. But in reality? I wouldn't worry about it!

Dudes don't do yoga... that's for females

* Balderdash! Yoga was actually created by men so many many years ago and its original masters, known as yogis were men. Maybe you argue that social norms today say otherwise. I strongly disagree. Take a look around a yoga studio or class at a gym. Bet you'll see a lot more men than you initially imagined.

* Yoga is constantly pushing into mainstream consciousness and its benefits are too good to be localized to one gender. It's catching on guys! Many studios are at a 2:1 female to male ratio now, compared to a 10:1 roughly 10 to 20 years ago. Besides guys, being surrounded and outnumbered by health conscious females can't be all bad.

Yoga is too expensive

* There is FREE "anything" on YouTube, not to mention Yoga workouts. There are websites with diagrams and written instructions. All programs are not created equal and each may be tailored to meet specific goals but to start out there is really no excuse in this information age. I like to purchase money back guaranteed programs so that I have an investment that motivates me but at the same time if the program is crap I can return it. Its a good model for many.

* Sometimes its much better to have some social interaction and enjoy the community aspect of an in person class. Most medium to larger facilities offer yoga as well as other exercise classes at no charge or at a slightly higher monthly membership fee. The big chains like Gold's Gym, L.A. Fitness and 24 Hour Fitness almost all offer yoga classes.

* The health benefits alone are going to save you doctor visits and prescription medications. A small monthly gym membership is well worth it in the long run, not only to your health but your pocketbook!

Hippies and 20 year somethings do yoga, not me

* This is a social perception that may have held more weight in decades past but not so anymore. There are no lines segregating factions. When yoga was unknown and first being introduced it WAS more accepted and practiced by more free-spirited "hippy" type of individuals. It was after all a new and "eccentric" eastern practice. Now we know its true irrefutable value.

* SO, because theses irrefutable health benefits being proven more and more by well-planned and funded scientific research studies, the practical benefits are just too good to turn a blind eye to, regardless of any demographic you belong to.

Weight loss cannot be achieved by yoga

* Absolutely FALSE and some of the primary reasons for its effectiveness may surprise you. They are not traditional concepts we ascribe to weight loss by 'exercise.' Someone suffering from obesity or perhaps just someone more" out-of-shape" than they'd like to be, either have a metabolic disorder of some sort or simply are under-performing in the metabolic arena.

* Increase in blood flow to all major body systems is one of the primary advantages of yoga. When certain poses are practiced it squeezes the organs within the abdominal cavities leading to higher organ circulation. Our organs in particular, need quality circulation in order to keep them working optimally and able to naturally remove toxins from the body. Oxygen and nutrient delivery are also dramatically increased with enhanced circulation.

* Emotionally, yoga helps releases "baggage" and other pent-up negativity while simultaneously reinvigorating the spirit. You don't have to think very long or hard to recall that you have been your healthiest when you have been your happiest.

* Energy centers - Yoga unblocks your energy centers or (chakras) within the body that regulate everything from the immune system to digestion. Many things can kind of "constipate" these energy centers and slow down our bodies. Whether or not you choose to believe this, much research is beginning to unearth this truth, and nonetheless dramatic health improvements are made.

There aren't other forms of Yoga

* There are many different kinds of yoga and each emphasizes a certain aspect of its general principles and goals. The most world-known practice of yoga is Hatha yoga but within the United States we are familiar with Vinyasa or Flow Yoga, Bikram or Hot Yoga, Power Yoga and yes even meditation falls within the category of yoga. In this article, we will not further discuss the differences and strengths of these various styles.

Yoga cannot be practiced by persons with injuries or chronic pain

* Fortunately this turns out to be false and in fact, yoga serves as a mode of therapy that can alleviate chronic pain better than many other forms of therapy. Notable conditions that can be helped by yoga include chronic back pain and rheumatoid arthritis. These kinds of conditions need to be outlined with a yoga instructor so as to minimize risk and maximize benefit through their expert advisement.
