Product Excellence From Horseware Ireland

By Jayne Rutledge

In 1985 the MacGuiness' created their company, Horseware Ireland. The business was built on the need for horsewares that were more durable and better suited to the comfort of animals. Before long they had taken over the market, leaving their competition with only one recourse. To quickly adjust their products to mimic those of Tom MacGuiness.

The original rug was called the Rambo and was designed to be water proof, not cause the horse to sweat and would not slip off or around on the animal. Their hard work and dedication paid off in 1996 by producing the best selling turnout rug in the industry, worldwide. Since that time they have made many changes and new products designed to help consumers and make the horses more comfortable.

The horse products they make demonstrate a highly developed knowledge of horse anatomy and what keeps them most comfortable. The improvements they made on their own products help keep the market fresh and moving forward towards excellence. They have improved the wugs to cover the higher arch of the neck and help keep them comfortable regardless of climate or terrain.

One of the new rugs they created is called the fly buster. It is specifically designed to keep the horses free of flies and other pests. It is made of a light enough fabric that it also protects them from the sun and helps keep them cool on summer days. The company has a variety of fabrics they have created to assure comfort for the animals.

The fabrics and fillers they developed for their products are designed to recover their fullness should the horse decide to roll on the ground and flatten them. The process of thermo-bonding allows for the fabric to return to its original form. This helps to retain the warmth of the cover by creating air circulation around the horse. They also developed a system of bonding fabric with water resistant components to keep the animal dry and the fabric soft and warm.

One of their best innovations concerns the nanotech moisture management system. This system chemically bonds water repelling molecules to fabric molecules to create a fabric that repels water and allows body moisture and water vapor to pass freely through it. This process allows for a much better feel to the fabric because it is not a surface applied substance designed to repel water.

This company has spent over twenty five years perfecting their products. Because of their dedicated attention to detail they have been voted Britain's best turnout rug for nine consecutive years and the rhino stable rug has been voted best for five years running. They also developed a line of clothing for horse owners and riders that has become very popular in the community.

In an effort to be earth friendly they use nothing but renewable energy sources. The factory in Ireland is operated entirely on wind generated energy. Horseware Ireland is a dedicated member of the ISPCA and donates thousands of rugs for abused animals at the facility and around the world. They are also aligned with an agency that furnishes critically disabled children with horse and carriage therapy.
