Running Tips that Will Keep You Fit and Healthy

By Ron Stucky

Running or jogging just might be the most natural method of exercising ever. Nearly every culture has been using running for exercise for centuries, way before there were ever health gyms or elliptical machines. In today's day and age, people aren't in the best shape, and running and jogging is one of the best ways to make everyone fitter. Keep reading to learn a few methods to get the maximum benefit from jogging.

Running with a group or a friend is a great way to keep you motivated and also provides accountability. While there's nothing wrong with running alone, having a partner can be a great source of motivation. You are less likely to quit or give less than your best if you have a partner running with you. Talking with someone while you jog can be fun, just don't let the conversation become a distraction. Be sure to focus on jogging and maybe save the conversation for when you're finished. Having a running partner can keep jogging fun.

It is most important to do light stretches that work the leg muscles before and after jogging. To remain safe and healthy while jogging, make sure you always pay attention to the terrain you're running on. Make sure you keep away from running on steep inclines or on surfaces that are very rocky or that have lots of obstacles. When you run or jog on hills and in terrain that's not flat, it can bring some spice to your routine, but unless you have done it before, you should stick to flat terrain. Running up and down steep inclines is adding a lot of extra impact on your feet, ankles and knees, and this is something you should avoid when starting out with running.

Always take in some water before you begin your jog every time. Don't eat before running unless you want to throw up - simple as that. The very best, number one thing to drink is water, and until our bodies change - that will remain unchanged. Don't drink a large amount before your run, as this can weigh you down. If you want to carry a water bottle with you when you jog, you can but it's really not necessary unless you're running a very good distance. Never drink water that has a color you cannot name - clear water is the ticket. We hope we don't need to explain why you should hydrate before and after - you should know that it's really important.

You can get a lot out of jogging, especially if you do it at least several times per week. Be sure to remember to stretch, not to overdo it, and to wear the right shoes. Using these tips will help you maintain a solid jogging routine year round.
