Out With Free Weights, In With Kettlebells

By Rob Sutter

Kettlebells seem to be the new way to go when it comes to training. Gyms are becoming inundated with customers and space at the gym continues to get scaled-down. Not only is space limited, but equipment is limited also. Sometimes finding a machine, bench, weights, or treadmill at the gym can be a dreadful experience. If you are familiar with these weights, you can answer the question "What are they helpful with here?" The reason is simple: space.

If you don't feel as though you're getting what you need at the gym, then working out with kettlebells may just be the path for you. If you didn't know about them before, essentially they are iron weights used for the sake of fitness and companies such as Lorna have taken to marketing them. The weights have the appearance of cannonballs but with grips attached. They were invented in Russia but have since become a trend in the United States.

When you work out with kettle-bells, several areas of the body are targeted. The target sections include, but are not limited to: legs, core, and shoulders. Because of its multi-purpose capabilities, the kettle bell is a great tool. These same capabilities also make the kettlebell a great alternative to free weights. You would only have to buy one kettle-bell, instead of buying sets of bars, bar bells, and free weights. There is the possibility that you would need to purchase a second kettle bell, but that is not always the situation.

Training with kettle-bells helps you reach your goals quicker than going to the gym would. Exercising with free weights usually has slower success rates when contrasted to these unique exercises. Those that are required offer a great solution no matter what you want to achieve. Weight loss, muscle building, and endurance building can all be achieved through this form of training. These great results are attributed to the intensity of the workouts.

Kettle-bells offer more explosive kind of workout. This is mostly due to the construction of the weight. With said weight, the center of gravity extends past the hand. This is different than free weights, where the center of gravity is at the level of the hand. This allows for swinging motions as well as lifting, pushing, and pulling actions. These movements help add to how efficient this unique weight is. For these reasons, it is a great substitute to free weights.
